PRICE TEN CENTS ; JAMES S. STOUT James S. Stout has filed on the Republican ticket for the County Board of Education. Stout is marketing manager of International Resistance Cor poration in Boone, and is on the official board of. the .Boone Methodist Church. He, Mrs. Stout and their four youngsters live on Oak Grove Road.. Stout is a member of the Ma sonic Lodge. Swain Comes To Boone IRC Philadelphia — Richard L. Swain has joined the Boone Di vision of IRC, Inc., as Manu facturing Manager, a new post. Prior to joining IRC, Mr. Swain was a Department Supervisor for Corning Glass Works in Raleigh, North Carolina. In announcing the appoint ment, Mr. Carl Smith, Division General Manager, commented, “IRC continues to undergo con siderable expansion; manufac turing activity at this Division must keep pace. To Explain Work Of £eace Corps At ASTC Miss Linda Sanderford and David Lewis, Peace Corps Vol unteers who have completed their two-year enlistments in Guatemala and Nepal, respect ively, will be on the Appala chian State Teachers College campus all this week to explain the work of the Peace Corps and to hold a Peace Corps Ex amination for applicants. A resident of Vilas, he is mar ried and has one son. He and his family attend the Brushy Fork Baptist Church. During World War II, Brooks served two years with the Navy in the South Pacific. H. 0. ALDRIDGE H. 0. Aldridge has filed on the Republican ticket for nom ination as a County Commission er in the May primary. He served as chairman of the Board of Commissioners six years, during which time he served on the State Welfare Board. He is married, the fath er of four and grandfather of 12. He attends Foscoe Christian Church and resides on Route 1, Banner Elk. HUGH B. HAGAMAN Hugh B. Hagaman has filed for the Board of Education sub ject to the Democratic primary. A son of the late Smith Haga man and Mrs. Hagaman, he was a Marine Corps officer in world war 2 and the Korean war. He is chairman of the Watauga County Educational Planning and Advisory Com mittee, former President Boone Rotary Club. He is married, the father of two children and they reside on Crest Drive in Boone. JOHN H. HOLLAR John' H. Hollars, appraiser manager of the Federal Land Bank Association, Boone, has filed on the Republican ticket for the Board of Education. Hollars is married and has two children. He and his fam ily reside on Poplar Hill Drive and attend Three Forks Bap tist Church. Hollars, who has formerly served on the Board of Educa tion, was in the Army during World War II. Noted Artists To Take Part In Arts Festival A program featuring the ap pearances of such notables as Nell Rankin, mezzo-soprano of the Methropolitan Opera, and Charleen Whisnant, Charlotte resident and editor of the Red Clay Reader, has been arranged for Appalachian State Teachers College’s annual spring arts j festival. Beginning on April 28, the ] festival will last for nine days, concluding on May 9 with a con cert by Edwin Grzenikowski, violinist and artist in residence of the University of Kentucky. The program of events also will feature a presentation by the college’s drama group, Bell, Book and Candle; movie classics and appearances by two colleg iate groups. In addition, there will be student competition, carrying cash prizes, for the best literary work, the best musical compo sition and the best painting. Miss Rankin, termed one of the world’s great Carmens and a leading concert artist, will ap pear at 8 p. m. on Thursday, April 28, in Greer Hall Audi torium to open the festival. A program of movie classics is scheduled for Saturday, April 30. The Appalachian String Quar tet and the woodwind trio and brass quintet will present a program on Sunday, May 1, at 2:30 p. m. in Greer Hall, and a student art show, including a gallery lecture, will follow at 4 p. m. in the Hall’s art gallery. Miss Whisnant, who has gain ed recognition for her encour agement of contemporary South ern writing, will speak at 8 p. m. Monday, May 2, in Greer Hall. A student musical composition is scheduled for 8 p. m. Tues day, May 3. Then, on Wednesday, Thurs day and Friday, the College Theatre group, under the di rection of Prof. David A. French, will present the play, Bell, Book and Candle each evening at 8 o’clock in the Ad ministration Building Audito rium. The concert by Grzenikowski at 8 p. m. on Saturday, May 7, will conclude the festival. Grzenikowski is a former eon certmaster of the National Bal let Orchestra of Washington, D.
